Look down at the ground on a cloudless, sunny day and tell me what you see! If you are near water, you may respond with something like “my reflection,” and if you are on land, you will most likely respond with “my shadow.” Interestingly enough, the Almighty Creator and Father chose to do the very same thing when making Adam and Eve, and by extension you and I –
Beresheit (Genesis) 1:26-27:
(26)And Elohim said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the livestock, and over all the earth and over all the creeping creatures that creep on the earth.”
(27)And Elohim created the man in His image, in the image of Elohim He created him – male and female He created them.
The original word behind the word “image” is the Hebrew word “tselem“צלם (H6754- tseh’-lem) meaning “an outline or representation of an original as a shadow is the outline of the original.” In its “noun form,” it means “an image or form of something as the shadow of the original.” We were literally formed out of the clay as the Father looked down on His own shadow, then filled with the breath of living spirit of Elohim. Woman, by extension, was also made in the image of Elohim for she was made in the image of man, hence the ending of verse 27. How amazing is that?
That’s also the reason why the Adversary (The bad guy, wicked one – you fill in the blank!) is obsessed with mankind – we were made in the image of the Creator! If you can’t harm the one who created you, what other way to hurt Him than to destroy those created in His image or change the image of creation. He has been doing that since the creation and will, I’m sure, continue until the end times!
There are plenty of other scriptural references to being in His shadow (see the study Shelter of His Wings for more info), but I will leave you with a quote from the prophet Isaiah:
Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 51:15-16:
(15) “For I am Yahweh your Elohim, who stirs up the sea, so that the waves of it roar: Yahweh of Hosts (tseva’ot) is his name.”
(16) “I have put my words in your mouth, and have covered you in the shadow of my hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the eretz (Earth), and tell Tsiyon (Zion), You are my people.”
